Standard Deduction

A fixed amount the IRS lets US filers subtract from income before tax brackets apply β€” no receipts needed.

The US standard deduction ($16,100 for single filers in 2026) is a no-questions-asked reduction to taxable income available to every filer. Taxpayers can choose to itemize deductions instead if their itemizable expenses exceed the standard deduction amount.
